Antirm LGFA book place in Ulster Intermediate final

Ulster Intermediate LGFA Championship

Monaghan 1-14 Antrim 3-12

In a thrilling encounter at Aghabog, Antrim came from behind to knock Monaghan out of the Ulster Intermediate Championship and secure a place in the final. Monaghan opened the scoring and led by three points before Bronagh Devlin scored Antrim’s first point. However, Monaghan stretched their lead before Orlaith Prenter and Theresa Mellon scored points for Antrim to close the gap.

Leanne Maguire raised the green flag for the Farney, but the goal was immediately cancelled out by Maria O’Neill doing the same at the other end, slicing her way through the home side’s defence. Monaghan added another two points before Prenter scored another free to leave the score 1-8 to 1-4 at half time, with Monaghan holding a four-point lead.

Antrim started the second half strongly, with Prenter scoring three points from frees to reduce Monaghan’s lead to just one point. Theresa Mellon then scored a well-taken goal to give Antrim the lead for the first time in the game. Monaghan managed to regain the lead with two points, but Antrim hit back with Áine Tubridy’s point and Maria O’Neill’s second goal of the day to put them firmly in charge.

Captain Cathy Carey and Prenter added points for Antrim to stretch the lead to six points, while substitute Gráinne McLaughlin also got her name on the scoresheet. A mid-air collision of two Monaghan players led to a lengthy delay, and although Monaghan managed to add two further points, Antrim held on for nearly ten minutes in added time for a deserved victory, winning by 3-12 to 1-14.

Antrim will now face Tyrone in Belfast in their final round-robin game before the two sides meet again in the Ulster decider at Clones on May 28th. Emma Kelly’s side will take great confidence from this comeback victory, as they look to cement their place in the intermediate tier after sealing last year’s junior crown and, just last month, winning promotion for the first time from Division 4 of the National League.
