Rory hat-trick paves way for convincing All Saints victory

O’Neill’s ACFL Division 2B

All Saints 4-15 Davitt’s 1-6

A few weeks ago the spectre of relegation hung over All Saints Ballymena but a recent good run of results has seen them climb into second place  in division 2B and above tonight’s opponents, Davitt’s on score difference.

With their respective league status secured in division 2 for another year both sides would probably have seen this game as preparation for their respective forthcoming championship games and while an understrength Davitt’s hung in there for a while they were eventually over ran by a rampant Ballymena side.

The visitors cause wasn’t helped by a sending off, midway through the second half but even at that stage the game had moved out of reach but the Ballymena side went on to drive home their numerical superiority with a blistering finish.

The game marked the return to All Saints colours for Peter ‘Pizza’ McReynolds following a two year sabbatical in Australia and the red haired mid-fielder put in an excellent shift but it was another returning Ballymena man, Rory McVeigh who stole the show with a sparkling display on the edge of the square.

Rory was out of action for over a year with a career threatening injury but has worked extremely hard to fight his way back to fitness and his return of 3-3 on the night would suggest that he is well on his way to achieving just that.

Michael McCarry 0-2 and Joe Rafferty fired All Saints into an early three point lead before the excellent Christopher Rafferty opened Davitt’s account with a point in the 10th minute. McCarry replied with a point for the Quinn Park side before Rory McVeigh opened his personal account with points in the 13th and 15th minute to put the home side 0-6 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the opening quarter.

Rafferty responded with the visitor’s second score but All Saints were dictating matters in most areas of the field and playing with good intensity as Michael McCarry and Eoin Campbell replied with points at the other end to move the men in white seven clear with nine minutes remaining to half time.

Davitt’s were playing some attractive football but were finding it difficult to penetrate a solid home defence where Peter McNicholl, Ciaran McGarry and Emmet Killough were giving little away but Sean Lindberg got in for their third point in the 23d minute.

Two minutes later they were right back in contention when Lindberg followed with a goal from the penalty spot and suddenly a six point lead had been reduced to two and questions were being asked of the Ballymena side for the first time.

Those questions were soon answered however as All Saints returned to the offensive with Michael McCarry sending over two excellent points and Rory McVeigh getting in for a goal in the 32nd minute to put a bit of daylight between the sides.

It was Davitt’s who opened the second half scoring when keeper Aaron Slane converted a second minute free but All Saints responded through that man McVeigh with a point in the 5th minute and Ciaran McGarry burst through for a fine individual goal with eight minutes on the clock. Michael McCarry added a point to stretch the All Saints lead 2-12 to 1-4 after 12 minutes.

Davitt’s cause wasn’t helped when they had a player dismissed in the 18th minute and two minutes later Rory McVeigh hammered home his second goal to put the contest out of reach of a Davitt’s side who were starting to wilt under the relentless pressure.

Michael McCarry pointed a couple of frees and Brendan McDonald added another from play before Padraig McParland replied with Davitt’s third point of the half with only three minutes of normal time remaining.

Davitt’s keeper, Aaron Slane moved up field once more to convert another free in the 28th minute before Rory McVeigh completed his hat-trick to conclude the scoring with another good goal and put the icing on a good night’s performance for the home side.

Davitt’s started well, moving the ball around and building promisingly but they lacked the overall fire power to trouble a solid All Saints defence. They now face St. Enda’s in the Intermediate Football Championship and even with all their players back on board they will be hard pushed to beat a side who have been doing well in division 1 this year.

The All Saints management will be pleased by their side’s performance on the night and indeed in recent weeks but will know that they too face a much stiffer challenge when they take on a Rasharkin team they have never beaten in championship football in a few weeks’ time.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers with the Antrim minor team and their mentors

Members of the Antrim Under 16 and Minor squads and their mentors who won this season’s All Ireland B titles were guests as a reception hosted by the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers on Tuesday 11th September at the council offices in Coleraine. Captains of the winning teams Ellen Hynds and Beth McAuley brought along the trophies which their respective teams had won this season, the minors beating Westmeath in an epic final in Drogheda back in April while the Under 16s saw off the challenge of Derry in August.

Offering her congratulations, the Mayor said: “It is very special for a county to win an All-Ireland title and I would like to offer everyone involved in this double success my very warmest congratulations.

“Sport plays an important role in our local communities. It promotes social skills, teamwork, self-esteem and discipline and we cannot underestimate the positive impact it has on our young people. These players have been guided by a group of dedicated mentors who willingly give up their time for their benefit and my thanks go to them for their continued commitment and the role they play.”

Impressive Tir na Nog take the Under-14 Title

Tir na nOg Randalstown 0-15 St Ergnat’s Moneyglass 1-02

Tir na nOg secured the under-14 league B title in impressive fashion when they proved too strong for a gallant Moneyglass side in the decider at Clooney on Tuesday evening.

The Whitehill Blues had progressed though their league programme in unbeaten fashion, and starting strongly in this one burdened by the hot favourites tag they never looked in any danger of defeat.

It was more than apparent right from the outset that the Randalstown boys had prepared well for this one and enjoying a physical advantage over their opponents they started on the positive, and indeed continued in such mode for most of the 40 minutes.

The Whitehill boys aided with the breeze signalled intent right from the off and with a couple of points in as many minutes as centre forward Conor Hastings raced through to raise back to back white flags.

The Moneyglass lads led in the offensive by Tiernan Mc Cormick looked for an early score to banish the butterflies but after a couple of enterprises on the positive came to naught as the Tir na nOg defensive structure stood tall in resistance and were to prove most adept on the counter.

Moneyglass continued to be backs against the wall for a time as the Randalstown lads laid siege and as Alister Mc Donnell (2), Conor Hastings, Shane Hinfey, Dara Martin, and Joe Mc Cormick raised white flags in turn they had established an eight point lead at the 13th minute.

The Moneyglass lads with Jamie Mc Laughlin, Kevin Mc Cann, and Brian Magee working hard in the defensive struggled manfully to stand tall in defiance but the Tir na nOg strike force oozed confidence going forward and concluded with stylish contributions on the scoreboard.

St Ergnat’s were finding it difficult to gain penetration through a strong rear guard with Tiernan Mc Cormick, Paul Duffin and flame haired Conleth McCann doing their utmost.

Conleth Mc Cann was unlucky to see his effort go just wide of the target in the 15th minute after a Tiernan Mc Cormick led attack and the Moneyglass lads were to fall further in arrears a couple of minutes later as Joe McCormick and the impressive Conor Hastings added points apiece.

The end of the opening period was in sight as the hard working Moneyglass did open account as Paul Duffin sent over the bar after a stylish approach as a Kevin McCann clearance and a foul on the advancing Matthew Cairns opened the way.

The dominant Randalstown lads had the last say in the period and a strong approach and an equally fine finish saw Alister Mc Donnell add another point to see his side take respite with a ten point advantage, 0-11 to 0-01.

St Ergnat’s started in the second period in need of scores and indeed with the wind as a friend and despite a physically stronger side were standing tall in defiance they were set to give it a lash and indeed were to be rewarded with an early score.

Brian Magee had defied an early attack from the previously rampant Tir na nOg forward unit when he made intervention and the clearance opened the way for a Conleth McCann point.

Tir na Nog did add a point in reply at the other end within a minute but back came the seemingly rejuvenated Moneyglass side and after Tiernan McCormick was denied by the cross bar following a smart Kevin McCann intervention on the 40, but a clever delivery, which seemed net bound until the woodwork intervened to defy.

Conleth McCann grabbed the loose leather intent on returning  it to the original destination but was fouled on deliverance and a penalty was the prompt decision.

The hard grafting mid-fielder assumed the spot kick duties himself with positive return and the gallant St Ergnat’s may well have caught sight of a chink of light at the end of the tunnel.

Any such Lazarus like return for the Moneyglass lads was not to prove the fairy tale ending to this tale as the lads from the Whitehill quickly returned to their dominance and proceeded to dominate the reminder.

Sasha Young and Conor Mc Kenna added points apiece to see normal service resumed and after both Joe Mc Cormick and Conor Hastings followed suit the Randalstown lads were at 0-16 to 1-02 and the long blast which followed saw them take the podium as under-14 league (B) winners.

Kennedy Centre Ladies Football Championships Round Up

kennedyCentre-copy-text

The Kennedy Centre Ladies football championships continued at the weekend.St. Ergnat’s Moneyglass Senior Ladies proved too strong for a young and new to Senior Championship side Naomh Séamas, Aldergrove and will renew acquaintances with old adversaries, St. Paul’s in the final.

Last year’s Intermediate champions, St. James gave it everything and with a young side at their disposal could be challenging the big two in the not too distant future.  St. Paul’s beat St. Gall’s in the other semi-final and will be going for their fifth successive victory over the Marrion Hill girls.

There were mixed fortune’s for St. Ergnat’s however as their second string lost to St. Brigid’s in the Intermediate Championship by a couple of points so this year’s decider will see St. Brigid’s meet Glenavy who defeated Con Magee’s in the other semi-final.

There was success too for St. Paul’s seconds in the Junior Championship as they defeated All Saints Ballymena in a high scoring game at Shaw’s Road, the game ending 3-21 to 3-12 in favour of the home side.

In the Junior B championship Oisins Glenariffe will meet Glenravel B in the decider after the Glenariffe girls defeated St. Comgall’s and the Con Magee’s had a good win over Sarsfield’s
